This Month In Hip-Hop: Le1f
POSTED BY Julian
With young rappers emerging in the scene like Tyler The Creator and ASAP Rocky who pride themselves on their dark and "rebellious" aesthetic, both of them combined have been unable to hold a tee to the controversy that is Le1f.
NY-based Le1f has been turning heads with this year's amazing mixtape release Dark York, featuring productions from some of the best underground electronic musicians, complemented by Le1f's unique deep voice and lightning speed rhymes. But what makes this rapper seem like the biggest rebel in hip-hop? The only reason is that Le1f is one of the only out homosexual rappers, who are ostracized within the hetero-dominated and homophobic rap scene.
Recently Le1f released an amazing video for his song "Wut" off Dark York that seemed to blow up on the internet. But unfortunately for the young rapper it has come with mixed reviews, hate mongering comments and bigotry seem to clog the pages of comments. This young talent definitely will have a difficult time trying to enter the rap community as an equal and this attention has really brought to light narrow mindedness that seems to still exist today. Don't let Le1f's sexual orientation have any effect on his music though, it is still quality hip-hop and worth an equal shot.
Amongst other strong rap releases this year like Azealia Banks, Zebra Katz and Death Grips Le1f stands strong and is my personal recommendation in the current world of rap.
Check out Le1f's video for Wut and decide for yourself if this is really worth all the controversy or if it is just another good hip-hop video.
