So far 2012 has enlightened me to many new favourites. New up-and-coming musicians and new albums from seasoned musicians alike have made their mark on this year, so here are my picks for what I consider to be the best songs released thus far.

Trust - Candy Walls

Dark synth electronic group Trust released their debut album TRST this year and it had the internet buzzing about. These Toronto natives have made an amazing album that follows in the footsteps of Toronto's dark electronica scene, and "Candy Walls" offers a beautifully slow sulking ballad with Robert Alfons' amazing alien like voice.

Light Asylum -IPC

New York-based industrial darkwave duo have really embraced the dark spirit of 80's new york electronic circuit and have made their self titled album an amazing mix of androgynous vocals and intricately structured analog synth beats. IPC being one that sounds almost as if the anthem to revolutionaries of the future.

Azelia Banks - JUMANJI

Our fav new manic panic rapper Azelia Banks is making pretty much everyone swoon over her upcoming first official release and JUMANJI is one of the first tastes of what's to come.

Toldyall - Lazer Sword

With the new trend of contemporary 90's techno come house revisionists Lazer Sword. Just releasing their first album Memory it is filled with chill nostalgic 90's house with wonderful vocal samples making, Toldyall one of my favourite songs off the album.

Le1f - MIND BODY

Le1f is a part of an emerging rap scene in New York that is a bold new step in hip hop, that being part of the queer rap scene a break from hip hop's more homophobic society.  But Le1f's music does not ooze any kitsch or reliance on gimmik it is just quality hip hop with excellent productions and an insanely smooth flow.

Santigold - Disparate Youth

Santigold made a huge impact with her debut album, and has kept low for a while. When she released information on a new album people went nuts and the result was worth the wait.

Doldrums - Egypt

Montreal-based Doldrums has been getting some deserved attention recently and his newest track Egypt has been on constant repeat for a while now. His uniquely arranged beats along with pop like melody almost sound like the electronic versions of 90' Disney movie scores.

Grimes - Nightmusic feat. Magical Cloudz

Our favourite new pop star's third album Visions has made a huge impact on the "indie" music scene and the mainstream music scene as well. Visions is a remarkable album of pure and genuinely made music.

Unicorn Kid - Pure Space

The upcoming Unicorn Kids LP is one of the most talked about and anticipated albums of the year Pure Space is a magical rave of love and happiness, that's pretty much what Unicorn Kid is.

Korallaven - Sa Sa Samoa (Elite Gymnastics remix)

Break beat and rave revivalists Elite Gymnastics took remixing a song to another level making this fantastic hardstyle techno version of its ethereal original. Elite Gymnastics recently just released a remix album from their 2011 LP Ruin.

Pattern mixing doesn't have to be difficult, have fun with it! The important thing to remember when putting patterns together is to look at the size of the pattern.

Emma is wearing the Ikat skinnies by Free People ($108), which have a bold print so we made sure to match them with a top that had a softer, more subtle print (the top is Monk & Lou, $44).  Pattern mixing is a good way to add more depth and texture to an outfit.  Remember to keep it simple, though. If you're mixing patterns, throw in a few neutrals, like the Maison Scotch anorak ($298) and these cute ivory Bass sandals ($90). A must-have for the upcoming shorts season are a studded pair of cut offs. A super easy DIY, you can have a brand new pair of shorts within hours! Feel free to go crazy with different designs and patterns, I did another pair with the back pocket all studded out too.

Throw them on with Propaganda Nolita Tank and you're ready for a day out, or dress them up with a silky blouse for some nighttime fun.

You'll need:

- A pair of shorts (I used the Big Blue Stella cutoffs)
- Studs (found at the local fabric store)
- A thimble, spoon, or anything you choose to use as your pressing tool
- Some patience!

Depending on your studs, there will either be 2 or 4 sharp points that you push through the denim and press down on the other side. Make sure you press them down firmly so they don't fall out or poke you!

Keep going until you're happy with what you've got and ta da! You're good to go.

I know what you're thinking...and the answer is yes. You can wear shorts now. I mean, have you been outside? Lead the pack with our favorites from Scotch and Soda, Levi's and Obey. This is an overlooked gem of last years releases of 2011. Minneapolis-based electronic duo Elite Gymnastics have been said to be rave revivalists of the new generation.

This album draws clear inspiration from 90's techno, bringing back the breakbeat/ hardstyle drum pattern. This fast-paced dance music is then paired by soft vocals and a laid back attitude, adding a level of euphoria to the album. This can be seen is songs like "Omari" and "Here In Heaven". There is even a layer of beach rock-inspired indie in this album as well as heard in little things. This is definitely a bold, new, exciting route electronic is taking with the recent revival of the 90's. Ruin has been released in 3 other forms as well one being a more laid-back chill version of the 1st, and the the others being remixes and a box set. Check out their video for Here In Heaven below!

This Tuesday, Plenty Uptown celebrated their grand opening with a party!

Invites were sent out a couple weeks back, and our customers definitely saved the date. The store was humming with excited shoppers from all over town, and the whole staff was ready for the crowd. Provided with scrumptious cupcakes from Cupcakes Uptown and bubbly from Yellowtail, customers were kept happy and buzzing.

With tunes from DJ Andrew and snaps by Garden City Photobooth (with props, of course), customers also had a chance to be silly and capture their memories at Plenty, and break out into a dance if they wanted to!

This past Saturday I had the chance to go to Victoria's first ever Sight and Sound Event!

Sight and Sound is a unique and festive evening of all things auditory. Local musicians, poets, and performers including sound artists inhabited the museum, and I got to experience the Royal B.C. Museum in a completely different perspective. The museum figuratively came alive as some of the sound artists mimicked the whistles of the birds, the grunts of seals, and the plethora of naturally-produced noises of the animals in the dioramas that were on display. 

The museum was filled with notable performers, from Kathy Rogers, to the Victoria Phonographers Union, and of course, the talented Janet Rogers and the Victoria Gum Sing Musical Society. 

One particular artist and group I really enjoyed was Janet Rogers, who was accompanied by the UVic drumming group. They were an absolute charm and turned the museum into a beating drum, which than felt like we were inside a beating heart! Janet Rogers is Victoria's 3rd Poet Laureate and she spoke in idyllic riddles and drew amazing art over some of the murals to explain and help the poems come alive from her collection of poems.

Another outstanding sound artist and performer, Peter Morin, did a theater piece with him speaking to the totem poles that were in one of the First People's exhibits. It helped me experience the stories and the languages that were once spoken in B.C. by some of the Indigenous Nations. This was all done whilst in the dark and mysterious hallways and corridors of the Royal BC Museum.

Sight and Sound is definitely an event I will be looking out for next year! What an innovative and endearing way to charm museum lovers!

If you're going on a trip, there are a few must-haves that need to make it into your luggage!

When you travel, you'll most likely be doing a lot of walking. You NEED a pair of TOMS!  Get a neutral colour like this olive green, they'll go with anything and you'll be comfortable the entire time!  At under $60, they are a MUST!  The items slung inside the luggage are the Maison Scotch anorak and the Monk & Lou maxi dress, $298 and $55.  The anorak is important - light enough to be able to carry around for long walks, and heavy enough to protect you against wind and a spring shower.  You can't go wrong with a maxi dress, and the price is amazing. This week, I've picked out 4 of my favorite photo-based t-shirts from Jack&Jones and Selected. Photo-based tees work the same way as carrying a photo around in your pocket (in this case, it's on your back) - it preserves a memory of a time and place, in a single soundless image. The dimmed blue lights of the Electric Owl suited perfectly for a night of moody, dark pop as Trust took the stage along with opening local electro banshees Myths.

The night began with one of my favourite local acts gracing the stage in glow in the dark DIY outfits as they played newer material sounding like the electro nightmare version of Snow White. The powerful duo showed off their singing chops belting out blissful melodies followed by shrieks than were only comparable to alien like screams. Although some of the audience did not enjoy the opening act, heckling the amazing duo during their own set. In the end, Myths got the crowd riled up for the dark Torontonian electro pop outfit Trust.

The band arrived on stage all in black with their eyes to the floor, and without any introduction began playing. Singer Robert Alfons then graced the stage and put the crowd in shock and awe with his unique androgynous singing voice. The atmosphere was perfect moving from dancy to moody until it all blended just to make perfect sense. The tension was only heightened by the bands disconnect with the crowd not speaking once, just performing their songs and leaving. It was a concert that didn't need any unnecessary banter, It was a concert that had me completely satisfied afterwards. The next time you see Trust is playing in Vancouver I urge to to see them!

After your base colour is completely dry, place the stickers at the bottom of the nail to form the half moon. You can also cut the stickers in half, whatever you find easier.

It's best if your second colour goes on solid in one coat - less fuss. Paint it from the top of the sticker to the tip of the nail. Peel off the stickers carefully, put on a top coat and you're good to go!

Although Pharrel (or Skateboard P) has been out of touch with the music world for quite some time, he makes up for it in style. He's the modern day Steve Mcqueen, which is why he's on my list for style influence. To define Pharrel's steeze would be like marrying the Steve Mcqueen look with a nautical Sunday (my favorite!), the perfect combination for turning heads and acquiring brownie points.

Just mix alot of classic with a little bit of modern and you're good to go. Keep it simple and old school (tartan and crewneck) and throw in a curve ball for the modern bit (lifetime shorts), sport a hat if you want to. "Can I get my thrills?"

The Bitmore Cabaret will be starting a new weekly dance party every Wednesday night called Tropical Love Connection.

Afternoon tea, also known as high tea, is a tradition from England that has become popular outside of the Queen's home. It is a small meal or snack shared between 2 - 5pm, and can be found as a delightful treat at bakeries, cafes or hotels.

One of the most fun parts about going for tea is getting dolled up! Spring weather is slowly becoming more consistent and afternoon tea is a perfect date with friends. Here are a few options from our SS12 Lookbook... throw on a cute dress, a floral top and some pastel pants and you're good to go!

Last week, I visited the Fairmont Pacific Rim for a birthday celebration. They presented us with an arrangement of teas to choose from, as well as 2 tiers of tasty treats and a side plate of scones. I've been to a few afternoon tea places around the city, and this one was different in its assortment of Asian-inspired finger foods. The bottom tier had a butter chicken sandwich, tuna tataki, and tofu nigiri amongst the usual suspects. The dessert tier had a delicious matcha cake and a berry macaron - yum!

Sperry Topsider's origins date back to the early 1930's when Paul Sperry (who used to work at Abercrombie and Fitch) learned first hand how slippery newly painted decks of a yacht could be.  He then developed the idea of adding emery dust to the paint which then gave the traction that he wanted, although any sort of body contact with the newly painted deck would be a rubdown with sandpaper. He then developed "The Deck Shoe".

From then on, he gave his attention to footwear. He looked into rubber soled shoes - however, this didn't solve the "slipping" problem. This wasn't resolved until he looked at his Cocker Spaniel, Prince, and how he was able to handle slippery surfaces. Sperry reworked his design and cut a geometric herringbone pattern along the sole. Deck shoes had been invented. Enter the "Top Siders". 

The Deck shoe was so popular that it was contracted to be worn by the US NAVY, and the prestigious Cruising Club of America. Today, it remains as a crucial staple in every man's wardrobe.

We here at the blog have been obsessed over the Yin Yang-loving, rave revisionist Unicorn Kid for a while now but now with the weather warming up and the sun poking it’s head out (finally) it seemed like the perfect time to share him with you!

Oliver Sabin, aka Unicorn Kid, is a electronic producer hailing from Leith, Edinburgh. With his bouncy techno and rave styles, Sabin has been thrown into the ever-growing internet phenomena known as #seapunk. If that is a bit too much to ingest in simpler terms, it basically means Unicorn Kid makes incredibly fun and happy dance music. Initially Sabin’s project began as glitch/ 8-bit but has evolved style and become more magical with each record (and new hair colour). Check out one of Unicorn Kid’s songs from his 2011 EP Tidal Rave, Boys of Paradise.

This week I visited our local Bin 4 Burger Lounge. I had heard many great things from my friends who have gone because they feature HALF PRICE BURGERS after 9pm with the purchase of a beverage! Best deal ever on gourmet burgers.

It's that time of the year again! We'll be opening the doors to our warehouse sale on Friday, 10am at 2148 Main St (at 6th Ave). Similar to last year, we have some tips for you to have a successful day of shopping:

DO:

- Dress appropriately - think leggings and a tank so you can try things on easily. Also wear comfy shoes.
-  Bring a friend. You can help each other find things & decide. (The more eyes the better, there's lots of great stuff!)
- Come fed & hydrated. (Who knows how long the day may be.)
- Go to the bathroom before you arrive
- Bring a reusable bag
- Bring cash, debit, or credit 

DON'T:

- Bring a ton of stuff, especially things of value. (We will ask that large bags be left at coat check.)
- Bring your drinks & food inside - no spills please!
- Bring young children or pets. It will be crowded, and they usually don't like the crowds.
- Get stuck outside - come early!

Although the new year is still budding, many artists have released info on their latest works and upcoming albums. Here are a few we are really excited to listen to!

Indie rock duo Beach House had us adoring their 2010 album Teen Dream, well 2012 marks another installment for the dreamy duo. Bloom is set to release officially may 15 on Sub Pop. I am personally excited to see the direction Bloom takes if you want a taste of the album the band has released their first single Myth.

Finally, finally, FINALLY!!!! Genre-fusing artist Santigold is back! It has been a while since her debut album and hopefuls were wondering if Santi would ever return to the music scene. But after being pushed back in what seems forever, her sophomore album Master of My Make Believe is out this month! From what I have heard of the album thus far the wait was worth it! Check out her newest video for the amazing song Disparate Youth!

Pop star MIA had mixed reviews for her last album, although it was my favourite of the current three. After a brief break it seems she is back with a bang this year. For her fourth album I am interested to see the amalgamation of all her influences. So far she released the debut single of the album Bad Girls along with an incredible music video. Let's hope she tours and stops here in Vancouver.

One of the most exciting artists to blow up in 2011, Azealia Banks has impressed everyone with her viral hit 212. But since then she has been slowly releasing new material and it seems this young diva is no one hit wonder. Her untitled album is to be released this fall.

Probably my absolute most anticipated album of the year comes from Canadian born electronic duo Crystal Castles. Their second album broke what most bands endure being the second album curse, impressing with was what I believed to be even better than their first. Not much detail has been released except they intend to remain genuine to their sound and that it is to be released this summer (summer dance party material!). Their work is surrounded by mystery much like how the band keeps their public image.

Cupcakes, macarons, donuts? What do these things have in common...

Aside from being delicious treats, donuts seem to be high on the food radar following the cupcake and macaron trail. My favourite donut places around the city use local ingredients, make them by hand, and are always best served fresh. Don't get me wrong, donuts are not a new thing, but I am more than happy to jump on this tasty bandwagon and continue to spread the word!

1. Lee's Donuts (Granville Island)

Lee's offers donuts that are consistently great. With over thirty years in the donut-making business, they really do have it down. Favourites include the traditional glazed (best when still hot), jelly-filled (made with real jam), and you can't go wrong with a boston cream! Grab a donut or two with a friend and walk around Granville Island - sounds like a great day to me.

2. Honey Doughnuts & Goodies (Deep Cove)

It's worth the trek to try a donut from Honey. Unlike any of the others on this list, Honey donuts are a heavier, almost dense cake donut that comes in three flavours - honey glazed, maple, and chocolate. Although it's a heavier donut, it somehow still melts in your mouth. Plus the view at Deep Cove is amazing on a sunny day!

3. Cartems Donuterie (Pop Up Location: 408 Carrall St.)

Cartems is the new guy in town, and definitely making waves! A true gourmet donut, Cartems offers flavours like earl grey (my fav), sweet snow (white chocolate + coconut), maple bourbon bacon (yes, there's bacon on this donut), and daily flavours like masala chai. They currently operate out of a commissary kitchen on Commercial Dr. and a pop up shop downtown. Constantly perfecting their recipes, Cartems is taking donuts to the next level. (Bonus is that they're super friendly!)

Founded in 2002 by Reid Stewart and Trevor Fleming, beneath a buzzing light bulb in a dingy basement suite in Vancouver, The Lifetime Collective began as a collaborative group of artists and friends. With clothing as the main focus, Lifetime is inspired by the communities we live in, the places we travel to, and the curious characters that surround us. We have been getting many ladies in for that perfect spring/summer dress. Whether you want to wear it to work, to a wedding, or for a date night - these dresses are great for all of the above.

The last dress is my favourite, I love the floral print, and the yellow skinny belt is just saturated with colour, it's just so bright and cheery for spring. This would be perfect for a date night or if you're a guest at a wedding!

Hernandez is one of Victoria’s many delicious, authentic eateries. Nestled between Yates and Douglas Street, this little joint offers affordable Central American tacos and is definitely sought out by the local foodies!

What’s really cool about Hernandez is that they have a “fast food menu” and a “slow food menu”. Their “fast food” menu is made to order within 5 minutes and is simple and easy. Whereas their “slow food” menu features items that take a little more time to make, like for example, my favorite black bean corn tacos on hand made corn tortillas. Hernandez will always be a go to spot whether I need a quick bite or if I’d like to sit down with a couple friends and enjoy myself a good taco!

The weather can't make up its mind in Vancouver, but my day dreaming has been pretty consistent. Warm sunshine that stretches into the long evenings shared with good friends, food, and some occasional people watching on a patio. Here are a few of my favourites, but I'm definitely looking to add to the list! Let me know about your local watering hole.

Chill Winston (3 Alexander St.)

This has to be the best patio in Gastown! I admit, a little on the pricy side, but sometimes you just have to treat yo self. Grab a couple of appies to share, pick from an extensive drink list, and you have yourself a recipe for a fun afternoon.

Havana (1212 Commercial Dr.)

Part restaurant and part theatre and gallery, Havana has tasty nibbles and fun drinks to match. The best is sitting on the all-weather patio and sharing a pitcher of champagne sangria - bubbly, mint, strawberries, fresh orange juice & cassis. I am also pretty fond of the strawberry ginger mojito on the side of some tostones and ceviche.

Local Public Eatery (2210 Cornwall Ave.)

Local is where you can mosey on over after a day of enjoying some sun in Kits to soak in a beautiful view of the beach and mountains. With cocktails served in a boot and enough nachos, poutine, and Nimby burgers to keep you happy, I think the only thing we're missing right now is some beach-time weather.

This week I've gathered a few things that have put a smile on my face: stripes, chinos, and nylon jackets. Nautical will always be in, and as a matter of fact, spring and summer are nautical seasons, so dressing up like you're going to the Hamptons is not out of place.

NEED: A short nylon jacket for this kind of temperamental weather is the perfect thing to lug around. Treat it like a sports coat, or a casual blazer and dress it up or down. Scotch revamped the old windbreaker with some needed tailoring so this one will fit you like it's custom made.

PLAY: Stripes play a big part in everybody's wardrobe. It breaks down colour, and amps your style by 10 notches when done right. A stripe can be tricky, but choosing when and how to wear it is the key.

RELAX: The Chino is essential to every man's wardrobe. I gave a lesson about it last week incase you missed out, but the bottom line is that you need a pair if you don't have one already. Naked and Famous did one in selvedge, that means it's all mighty and durable and will never fray.

Didja hear? We've got printed Big Blue jeans in! If you haven't heard by now, printed denim is one of the biggest trends for this spring/summer, leopard and florals being the leaders of the pack. This video perfectly complements the moodiness that Austra's music has us loving more and more. Gothic woods and creepy children, who could ask for more in this beautifully shot video.

Seriously, what more can we at the Plenty blog say about Grimes? If this girl was any more endearing and lovable, I think the universe would implode.

The internet just seems to be overwhelmed with 90's nostalgia these days. This Fostercare video takes inspiration from old house music vids.

Vatican Vibes - Fatima Al Qadiri

Fatima Al Qadiri's 2010 EP was an experiment in infusing many different genres of music together, just like how this video is a journey through many different genre of videogames.

On March 20th, Vancouver will be celebrating our first-ever Jour du Macaron, or Macaron Day. Just like fashion, food goes through trends. Last year was cupcakes, and this year has definitely been taken over by macarons. Not to be confused with its coconut friend the macaroon, a macaron is a meringue-based little sandwich treat, usually filled with flavoured buttercream, ganache, or jam. 

Macaron Day started in the birthplace of macarons, France, to raise money and awareness for various charities. Seen throughout France, New York, and Toronto, it only makes sense that Vancouver join in on the fun.

Coffee, Passion Fruit, Lychee, Lime, Vanilla, Pink Praline

Local patisseries Thierry, French Made Baking and Soirette will be celebrating on March 20th. Ten percent of all macaron proceeds from Thierry will be going towards Growing Chefs! Chefs for Children's Urban Agriculture, French Made Baking will be giving out free macarons to visitors and collecting donations for the BC Children's Hospital Foundation, while Soirette will be supporting the Make a Wish Foundation.

Chinos are probably my favorite, if not, my go-to spring/summer pant. They're lightweight, casual, and easy to dress up or down. 

Chinos originated from the chino cloth (a cloth made in China), which is a twill fabric made with 100% cotton. It's dyed in various colors, and this spring you'll find alot of muted colors (greys, mints, and even rose). The staple colors to get are probably a tobacco color, a black, and a grey.

The Chino was developed in the mid-19th century for women in the British and French military but since then have migrated into menswear. Trousers made from the chino cloth were inspired by troops coming back from the Spanish-American War, military chinos have no pleates and were tapered at the leg bottom, to conserve fabric.

When soldiers came back from war, they continued to wear their military chinos especially to college, where it gained popularity and became a staple to the 'preppy-look' (mainly because denim wasn't accepted as proper attire).

We spent this past weekend on location in a little greenhouse just outside of the city. You can't tell from the photos above, but the weather was grey and windy and brutal - usually not ideal for a photoshoot, but we managed anyway! The state of the music world is quite strange these days, everything is digital and cd's have pretty much become obsolete. But from this digital obsession came the rebirth of interest in vinyl.

Vinyl not only adds an awesome vintage feeling to any space but also feeds humans need to collect things. Vinyl lasts far longer than a cd or cassette and also depending on the album vinyl can add an amazing sound creating a whole different experience when listening to an album! I recently have begun my collection after receiving a great record player for christmas and it seems to be growing more and more every month.

My newest addition comes from LA based synth rock band Bestial Mouths one of the best albums of 2011 and packed full of artwork, lyrics and the vinyl is clear!

One of the things I love the most about collecting Vinyl records is the fact that bands and artists usually go the extra step with the artwork included in the album or when it is printed on things like clear vinyl or red or marble, the possibilities are nearly endless and watching something like that spin while playing is just entertainment in itself.

One of my favourite records comes from local group Animal Bodies, which their EP Kiss Of The Fang is printed on white and blue marble vinyl.

But where is the best place to find records? Well there are a few stores in Vancouver that I tend to visit often Redcat Records and Dandelion Records on Main, Zulu down on 4th ave and then there is always the bargain bins at thrift stores you really never know what you can find there. But My favourite go to place has got to be Zoo Zhop on Main and Powell.

A great place to get local releases, step into Zoo Zhop and allow eccentric owner David to take you on a journey through his incredible musical knowledge. Although small, Zoo Zhop offers a different variety of music from the other stores in Vancouver (I am currently lusting over a Xeno & Oaklander and Soft Moon record there) and the customer service is out of this world.

This past weekend, the Fernwood Community Centre, also known as the The Big Fernwood, held the VintAgeous Vintage Fair! Filled with over 35 booths of vintage clothing, jewelry, toys, household items, and collectables, it brought in many vintage enthusiasts to find hidden treasures.

Bella, the cutest pup around, from the popular Sam's Sideshow Boutique came out and supported Sam’s table with her fabulous vintage items. Vintage Fair Victoria has scheduled Spring, Summer and Fall Fairs, so there will be no shortage of vintage goods throughout the year. Do you have vintage wares you would like to sell?
