2013 is definitely the year that dance music has been revived. DJ's are the new rock stars, and even today's Top 40 musicians like Nicki Minaj and Rihanna, are donning heavy trance influences. But nothing is like the new dawn of House music. Influenced by the roots of this subtle dance genre, artists like Disclousre, have gained #1 record status in their homeland of England. Here is a list of some quality House musicians out there!

Disclosure

This heavy hitting UK brother duo consists of Guy and Howard Lawrence. Gaining a name for themselves in the underground dance scene, Disclosure became something much bigger. Working with some of England's best talent such as AlunaGeorge and Jessie Ware, and touring internationally, these young brothers have a bright future!

Teengirl Fantasy

Another duo, Teengirl Fantasy are a Ohio formed group, made up of Logan Takahashi and Nick Weiss. Having toured with Bon Iver and Crystal Castles, TGF have been heard for their intrinsically unique approach to electronic and pop music. Highly textured and often sample free beats separate TGF from the DJ performer norm with their entire approach to performing live.

Pictureplane

Travis Egedy, better known as his eccentric House/Pop persona Pictureplane. Gaining high praise by critics for his albums Dark Rift (2009) and Thee Physical (2011) this Denver native has been seen touring alongside Major Lazer and Crystal Castles! The most amazing thing about Egedy is his ability to make dark sounds sound pop-like and uplifting. His lyrics mainly consist of Occult themes and the post-physical, yet still are catchy and fun to sing along with.

Strawberry Basil Lemonade (adapted from Damn Delicious):

Yields 2 1/2 quarts

INGREDIENTS:

• 2 cups strawberries, hulled and sliced
• 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves
• 1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
• 1/2 cup sugar

DIRECTIONS:

Combine strawberries and basil in blender until smooth.

In a small bowl, whisk together lemon juice and sugar.

In a large pitcher, whisk together strawberry mixture, Meyer lemon juice mixture and 4 cups water. Place in refrigerator until chilled.

Serve over ice, if desired. Don't forget to add basil as garnish and a slice of lemon, and enjoy!

We're a few weeks closer to summer, and although the weather doesn't seem to be a reminder of that, that doesn't mean it should stop us from being beach ready! We've put together a couple of looks for a typical Vancouver summer, whether it be cold, warm or hot.

This New York based artist first made his name known through the popular dance genre Juke/Footwork. But on this album, it is much more of a futuristic club feeling with a nostalgia for analog dance music circa 1990's.

Slava also incorporates a unique style of vocal sampling using artists like Ciara, Beiber and t2! Their voices are chopped and hurled at high-speeds along ethereal synthscapes and intelligent drum beats.

Sometimes female artists get overlooked for their talent but there are many that are paving new and exciting avenues in the music world. Here are my current favorite female musicians:

Laurel Halo (Pictured to the Left)

Originally hailing from Michigan but then moving to New York, Ann Arbor aka Laurel Halo, takes influence from her Mid-Western roots with incredibly composed techno. Her album of 2012, Quarantine, was a fav of mine, landing in my Best of 2012 list.

Kelela Mizankristos

The young and talented Kelela is turning heads right now with her unique approach to R&B. Powerful vocals would find this girl working with pretty much any producer, but Kelela seems to roll with a different kind of musical crowd. Teaming up with some of the scenes most promising and talented acts such as Teengirl Fantasy, Arca and Kingdom. Her track with Kingdom Bank Head is by far one of my favourite songs of 2013!

Fatima Al Quadiri

New York based producer Fatima Al Qadiri brings a unique approach to club ready genres like Dubstep and Bass. Her latest release Desert Strike turned heads is 2012, an EP influenced by her experience as a child during the Gulf War. But not only does Qadiri produce, she also finds time under another musical alias, Ayshay. A very vocal and ethereal project. Qadiri is also a reporter for popular internet art magazine DiS.

Ciara

One of my favourite R&B singers is back, and my reaction is, "Wow is she ever!" Ciara's newest self titled album (released in June), is her first release in 3 years and it has definitely delivered thus far. Her track Body Party is incredible boasting an onslaught of great remixes. Ciara has managed to capture the world's attention once more.

Front Row Society scarves are so beautiful you can't stop looking at them.  Front Row Society works with a number of designers who have the opportunity to  submit prints and patterns; after submission, each design is voted on and winning designs are curated into seasonal collections!  At $40 a piece, each scarf has a story and a blurb about the designer who brought their artwork forward.  Such a great idea, we love it!  Come visit us to find your perfect pattern just in time for summer.  Hint hint: these scarves make a great mother's day gift.

His latest release, Chunky Monkey, gives an homage to late 90's electronica Trip-hop such as the likes of Acid Jazz. ADR's sound on this album contains Acid dripping synths, tripped out drums, and the occasional tropical beat. A perfect easy-listening album that makes you think. If you're visiting our lovely neighbor city of Victoria, you NEED to go to Jam! Great breakfast and lunch, and the atmosphere and customer service are equally awesome!  The decor might even give you ideas for your own home, and the food will make you say "breakfast is my favorite meal of the day". We are currently loving all of the pieces from our men's collection; easy to wear classics that are sophisticated without losing all the fun.

Denim jackets are the spring essential. You can basically wear it with anything (even denim) depending on the wash - you can brighten or tone down an outfit.

If the ladies can layer, guys can too. Layering adds a certain depth to an outfit and also shows off how well you can style yourself (assuming you do it right). The baby steps to this trick is to start with button ups, V-neck sweaters and the like. In this case, we paired a striped henley over top of a button up. The stripe helps break down the blues and gives the outfit more of an interesting look.  We paired the outfit with Levis' classic chino in light tangerine for a pop of color.

Pullovers shouldn't be boring. Our new PGD striped pullover (also comes in heather grey) is the perfect spring sweater. Light enough to layer and thick enough to be worn on a cold spring morning - or take it straight into fall. Whatever your surroundings, this sweater is sure to follow you around.

We love getting new arrivals, and every season we always seem to have favorite items that we just can't live without!  What are my "all-stars" this  spring? Well that's easy, there's so much to choose from!  First on the docket are the distressed Leona's. Cuff them with flats, wear them with heels, tuck them into your favorite Frye's...These jeans will get a lot of use this season!  Next on the list is the recently back in stock Ivy Long Cardi. Speaking from experience, (I own it in two colours) this sweater gets a lot of mileage! Throw it in your beach bag, wear it on the airplane, and even throw a jean jacket over top. What an easy way to look great with little effort. Third on the list is the flowy pleated Monk and Lou skirt.  The secret is in the texture. - Come fed & hydrated. Bring some water too!
- Go to the bathroom beforehand
- Bring a reusable bag for your new goodies

DON'T:

- Bring heavy layers, things of value, and large purses. We will be asking that bags be checked at the door.
- Bring young children or pets - they won't enjoy shopping as much as you!
- Bring in food - no spills please

Chicco Cafe is a little gem on Robson with parfait, gelato, cake and other delicious baked goods. The variety of parfaits is my favourite part of Chicco and they're just that - perfect! A layered dessert with lots of treats including ice cream, fruit, macarons, pudding, you name it. Top picks include Black Sesame, Green Tea, and Mango.
